The Sunspot National Solar Observatory is located in a rural area of Sunspot, New Mexico. The observatory is a public research center used to further our knowledge on the physics and tendencies of the Sun.  However recently the observatory has been involved in some odd occurrences, and nobody really seems to know why, and it looks as though the government and authorities intend to keep it that way.

The observatory was built in 1947 by the military after the sun interfered with radio signals during World War II. The NSF (National Science Foundation) ran the foundation from the 1960’s until just this year, when control of the site was transferred to AURA (Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy), as well as New Mexico State University. Very recently, however, it’s been occupied by only government officials.

On Thursday, September 6, workers were given a very general order to calmly, however quickly, evacuate the premises of all staff and visitors. Local police arrived soon after to follow through with the order, however, they too were kept in the dark about the whole situation. Soon after police arrived, federal agents were on the scene, letting absolutely no one onto the scene. “There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers, but nobody would tell us anything. I don’t know why the FBI would get involved so quickly and not tell us anything,” said Otero County Sheriff Benny House (CNET).  Local homeowners were also evacuated from the area with no explanation, and given no time frame for when they could return.

The FBI had refused to release any information as to why the observatory was closed or as to why everyone was ordered to evacuate so quickly until just the other day. The answer? A criminal investigation in the area. However, there are many who do not believe this explanation. Some of the possible explanations that people have come up with are an alien sighting that the observatory captured while taking routine pictures, a possible “doomsday solar flare” that the government is trying to keep under wraps to avoid global panic, and other similar stories involving aliens and/or the end of the world.  The more plausible explanation for all of this commotion, however, is a device used to spy on the military. As crazy as it sounds, this is the most logical explanation for all of this. Planting some sort of observation gear on the Sunspot grounds would provide “a good view of the White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base” (Space.com). Nothing is confirmed, however, as investigations are still ongoing. Sunspot National Solar Observatory is scheduled to reopen in a couple of days.

Whether you believe it was aliens, a doomsday threat, or something out of this world, one thing is for certain: something strange went on in Sunspot a few weeks ago, and no one really knows what it was.
