Many studies have shown that alcohol and drugs are extremely unhealthy for the human body. Some people believe that having small amounts of alcohol is not bad for you. “If you’re one of the third of all humankind who drinks alcohol, there’s no amount of liquor, wine, or beer that is safe for your overall health” (LaMotte, CNN). One of the main factors for diseases and premature death is alcohol. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says “ Alcohol interferes with the brain’s communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. It can also change mood and behavior.” These studies show that alcoholism can affect the body but it can also affect the way alcoholics interact with other people.

Drinking can also cause damage to the heart. It can cause “cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, stroke, and high blood pressure” (National Drug Abuse and Alcoholism). Alcohol can also cause cancer in certain areas such as: the mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and breast. All of these causes are reasons why drinking alcohol should be stopped.

An article given by Alcoholics Anonymous about the story of Annie is a great example of a life that could have been ruined by alcohol if she did not get help. At first she was happy, she was married and had two children, but that did not stop her desires to drink. She started sneaking drinks whenever she had company, she stole money, and she would make any excuses to have a bottle. Annie said, “ It got worse, I started to feel ashamed.” She ended up getting a divorce and that led to a unhappy life full of chaos. She realized it was a problem when her neighbor told Annie that she needed help. She got help and she said, “ My life has changed in ways that are beyond belief. I have faith in the future and I’m no longer ashamed of my past. I’m so grateful for the chance to live free from the obsession with alcohol”. Annie realized that she was happier when she was sober. Her life started falling back into place and she was able to help others. This story is one of many stories that have been told about the dangers of alcohol. That is why it must be stopped.
