In past seasons, the Chargers have only played the Queen Creek American Leadership Academy in their football season, but just this year, the Ironwood and Gilbert American Leadership Academy campuses have been added to their schedule. This past weekend the Chargers made a short trip to play ALA Gilbert. Prior to their game, the Chargers were 2-0 on the 2018 football season, but this last weekend’s game did not have the outcome that the Chargers were hoping for.

The game, which took place on Friday, August 30, began at 7:00 on ALA’s new turf field. The captains, Jordan Kemp, Chandler Miles, Chris Rendon, and Grant Reeves, walked onto the field together for the coin toss. The Chargers won the toss and selected to kick. As the game began, both teams came out strong, but ALA marched down the field and scored on a quick ten play drive to take a 6-0 lead, after missing the extra point. Right away, the Charger’s offense showed ALA that they were not gonna make it easy for them. They ran the ball hard with their different double-wing offense and ALA could not do anything to stop them from gaining yards. After a twelve play drive, Charger’s running back, Chancin Loving, ran in a two yard run for a touchdown. These two drives showed everyone that this was going to be a defensive battle.

The Eagles and the Chargers went back and forth, with ALA scoring in the second quarter, bringing them to a 14-7 lead. After stopping the Chargers on their next drive, ALA got the ball inside the five yard line with only a few minutes left in the second quarter. On ALA’s first play, they fumbled the ball on the two yard line, and Bradyn Lemieux recovered it. This led the Chargers to quickly score and finish out the half 14-14.

Beginning the second half, the Chargers received the ball. Again, the second half consisted of ALA and the Chargers making strong offensive plays and scoring multiple times. As the time was winding down in the fourth quarter, the Chargers scored on a forty yard run by running back, Chandler Miles, to tie the game up at 35-35. ALA got the ball with less than two minutes left in the game. They had some big runs that led them within the ten yard line. There was only ten seconds left and ALA ran one more play. They ran a trick play to their running back and with no time left on the clock, ALA scored. ALA beat the Chargers 41-35.
