Alex O’Connor, who is known by his stage name — Rex Orange County — , at age 17 came out with his first album in 2015 on Soundcloud. The album is called, “Bcos U Will Never B Free.” Alex’s album unfortunately did not grant him instant fame. However, popular rapper Tyler, the Creator noticed the unique styling Alex produced in his album. Alex was very pleased to hear feedback from Tyler, The Creator, because Alex had always respected his craft. Alex was invited to be on Tyler’s album called “FlowerBoy” and was set to be part of the background vocals. Alex was featured on two songs of the album. These songs were titled: “Boredom” and “Foreword.” When  first listening to these songs people expected to hear Tyler,The Creator, ‘do his thing’ when he raps. What really caught peoples attention was the amazing background vocals. When people listened, people first wanted to know who was singing in the background. When Tyler, The Creator’s album dropped in July 21, 2017 was when people were introduced to Alex.

People were pleased to hear his amazing voice. On his first album “Bcos U Will Never B Free.”Alex said what this album meant  to him, “I was really angry, and kind of sad, and a little bit self-pitying and self-loathing, It was all because of a certain situation with someone else.”He showcases to his fans what his general sound is like through a song called “Paradise” off the album. The song starts off very dreamy and slow with his voice. Then it gets really upbeat and the chorus is very catchy. Some peoples  favorite part of this song is at some point he finishes a verse and it seems like the song ends, but it is just a long pause. Listeners are surprised to hear the song jump back to the chorus which catches the audience off guard. Rex is able to bring heavy emotionally charged songs while still making them catchy and upbeat. Another song that most would agree really stands out is called “Corduroy Dreams”. This song is more unique than the others because most of them have other instruments in the background that make the beat come alive. Whereas, “Corduroy Dreams” puts on a more relaxing and simply produced vibe to it. He puts much emotion into this song which allows people to recognize the extent to his vocals.

Alex’s next album called “Apricot Princess” released in April 26, 2017. This album was really the turning point for the Rex Orange County sound. Alex blended a jazzy pop feel to most songs on the album. Some would say this album represents the emotions he is going through with a girl or life in general.

Rex Orange County is a refreshing new sound that, in some ways, departs itself from the generically predictable sound most artists are reaching for in today’s music industry. His music is raw, new, and full of emotion that it makes it hard for listeners to not correlate their lives into each song. Alex is one with his fans which allows him to put out music that relates back to a lot of listeners, no matter what kind of audience he has. He most definitely deserves much more recognition than he currently has and, hopefully in the near future, more people will get to find that out for themselves.
