Over the past few months, teachers in public school districts across the world are participating in the Red for ED movement. This movement is to hopefully increase teacher salary because they believe they are not receiving what they deserve. Without teachers, there would be no way to teach the many fundamentals to children in order to succeed in life.

Recently, Kentucky’s Republican governor, Matt Bevin, warned: “If we don’t change anything, the system will fail, and most of the people now teaching will never see one cent of a retirement plan.”  Many adults teach for their living and they enjoy helping kids want to strive to be the best they can, however they aren’t making enough to live off of and, when the time comes, they won’t be financially prepared to afford during their retirement years. Teachers are fighting and doing everything they can to have government step up to the plate and pay more towards the teachers.

On february 22, West Virginia started their teacher walk out demanding a pay raise and was successful in receiving a 5% pay raise to all state workers including teachers.  Even though it probably wasn’t the biggest pay raise they were expecting, their voices were heard and they are slowly making an increase in pay.

The starting salary for an Arizona certified teacher in certain school districts can be less than $35,000 per year. According to many teachers this is a huge slap in the face, and on top of that, they have to sometimes purchase classroom needs with their own personal income. Arizona second grade teacher Elizabeth Milich makes about $320 a week and has to supply the poorly-supplied classroom she was given when she entered the teaching business. After being ridiculed for being “whiny” for participating in the red for ed movement, mean thoughts for her makeup look, and many more rude things, several people realized why she was participating in the movement. She would spend about half of her tight income on the kids she was teaching whether it be snacks, rugs, chairs, and other countless things so these kids feel important. Her story went viral and people began to stop making negative comments on her facebook page and started sending words of love and encouragement. “Dear Mrs. Milich,” read the card. “With the most important job in the world, you shouldn’t have to use your own funds for school supplies.” A sixth grader in London saw this story and wanted Milich to know how blessed the kids of her class were to have her. Milich was gifted a $150 gift card, and some basic school necessities.

The Red for Ed teacher movement is a way for teachers to voice their needs on a higher income. April 25 to April 27, public school teachers in Arizona are walking out and schools will be shut down until their demands are met. Majority of the teachers are bombarding the state capital to get the state legislatures to give them a higher pay.
