Prominent actor Johnny Depp is suing his former wife, Amber Heard.

The lawsuit first came about in March of 2019 as a reaction to Heard’s infamous op-ed published four months earlier. The article, issued by Washington Post, had added to the #MeToo movement. The campaign included victims who would speak openly about the abuse they had received, raising awareness of violence that often gets downgraded and unnoticed. The op-ed had Heard speaking out about her own experiences with abuse, with the article candidly titled, “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”

Heard had never specified Depp’s name in the op-ed. Despite that, she revealed that she had become a “public figure representing domestic abuse” in 2016. The statement had begun to raise a few questions as more and more attention was caught to the line.

The same year, Heard and Depp had decided to end their four year long relationship, announcing their soon-to-be divorce. The proclamation had later brought along Heard’s first accusation against Depp. To court, Heard had brought with her a picture of her bruised face, stating that the cause was Depp. Although this first allegation of abuse had been denied by Depp, the judge had finalized a mandate that would not allow Depp to be near her. In 2017, the trial was settled with Depp and Heard being officially divorced under irreconcilable differences.

The op-ed’s claim regarding the two actor’s relationship had led to the most recent lawsuit. First prompted in February of 2019, Depp had filed to sue Heard over accounts of defamation. While it’s noted that Depp’s name was never explicitly stated in or outside the article, according to news outlet Los Angeles Times, “it was clear that Heard and other media outlets reporting on the piece were talking about him.” Depp is currently suing for a grand total of $50 million.

The lawsuit stated, “Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016.” Also claiming that the roles of their relationship was actually reversed with Heard being the true perpetrator. Depp had testified that he was the one who had faced abuse, providing a picture of his severed finger done by Heard to be used as evidence proving his claim.

The continuous accusations Heard would make against Depp had reached many different publishings with a massive amount of press occurring. This isn’t the first lawsuit conducted by Depp regarding the situation as, just a year before the 2019 case, Depp had tried to sue news outlet The Sun over their striking headline: “Gone Potty: How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?” The results had been less than amazing as Depp lost the case.

Depp’s defamation trial had officially begun on Tuesday in Fairfax County, Virginia and continues to gain attraction.
