New York Gangbanger Arrested Again While LEO Outraged for Lack of Punishment

Justin Murrell, a twenty-year-old Brooklyn man has been arrested once again for a similar incident that landed him in a juvenile detention center for less than four years.

In 2017, Detective Dalsh Veve from the NYPD was responding to shots fired in East Flatbush when his life was altered forever. The suspect, being 15 years old at the time, was being questioned about the suspicious activity when Murrell hit the gas and reached a speed of 60 mph. While he fled, he dragged Detective Veve for nearly two blocks who was able to shoot the suspect in the jaw before he fell from the car. This left Veve with immense head and body injuries, paralyzing the officer and taking his ability to talk. The suspect eventually abandoned the car to seek medical attention and subsequently was arrested.

In court, Murrell’s lawyer, Natalie Peeples, advocated for the gangbanger, stating that it was an act that got out of control and that it was not intentional to injure the detective. The jury agreed to Murrell pleading guilty to assault, while he acquitted of attempted murder charge. Although Murrell faced up to 10 years for the crippling of Veve, Judge Ruth Shillingford only sentenced the suspect to a lighter sentence in a juvenile detention center. This angered Veve’s family as well as the prosecutors. The detective’s wife, Esther Veve described the lenient conviction saying, “It was a slap in the face.”

The repeat offender has kept a reputation in New York for stealing vehicles and evading the police. When he was on parole for the 2017 incident, he stole another vehicle and caught himself in another high-speed chase. This offense ended with Murrell ramming into several parked cars in East New York and no one was injured. He was released on a $25,000 bail. According to Daily News he was charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, and running a red light. After his plea in court on Monday for his 2021 case, Murrell was arrested yet again for a similar case in February of this year. He provoked another high-speed chase with the police in a stolen vehicle.

The New York community and law enforcement is outraged about the lack of discipline and punishment for Justin Murrell. New York’s Police Benevolent Association has publicly spoken on their stance with Murrell. They are insulted that even though he has a long history of crime and parole violations, he walks as a free man. Many people will not stop until justice is found for Detective Veve and others that have been affected by Murrell’s actions.
