According to Child Help, “A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds”. A 2014 report showed 1580 children died due to neglect or abuse.

On Sunday, October 24, 2021, the Harris County Sheriff’s office received a call from a 15- year-old boy. He reported that he and his 10-year-old and 7-year-old siblings had been living in an apartment in the downtown Houston area for months without any parents. The authorities have made a terrifying discovery in the abandoned apartment. These three malnourished, neglected children had been living in the apartment with the remains of a fourth child, likely their sibling, for nearly a year. The three boys appeared to be malnourished and subject to physical abuse and were taken to the hospital to be treated. The first request of the children was to eat donuts.

Ed Gonzalez, from the Harris County Sheriff’s office, recounted the scene as “very disturbing”, according to The Guardian. He has been updating the public on this unraveling case. The mother and boyfriend were taken into custody and then released. Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the couple were arrested at a public library as they were researching news articles about themselves. Brian Coulter, 31, and Gloria Williams, 35, are facing charges of murder, injury of a child, and tampering with evidence. Their bonds are held upwards of a million US dollars with no contact with the children or any other minors.

Sgt. Dennis Wolfard, leading the investigation with the sheriff’s homicide unit, believed the boy had died around Thanksgiving of 2020. Coulter is being accused of beating the young boy to his death, reporting he died due to blunt force. The apartment was nearly empty of furniture, soiled carpet, and covered in roaches and other bugs. Wolfard states this case has been one the most disturbing cases he’s encountered.

Williams had knowledge her son was beaten to death by her boyfriend in November 2020, but failed to report it due to her fear of CPS and prison. CPS has custody of the three children and the homicide investigation is ongoing.
