On September 3, 2021, Marvel Studios added their newest movie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This movie was released only a couple months after the MCU introduced the movie, Black Widow. Actor, Simu Liu, who plays Shang-Chi, must come to terms with the past he left behind. Together with his sister, Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) and his best friend, Katy (Awkwafina), they gather to try and take down Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), the father of Shang-Chi and Xialing. Their power-hungry father wants his children to help him find their late mother, who Wenwu claims is still alive. Knowing the powers of the rings, the siblings and Katy work together to find a way to stop their father from creating chaos by the control of the ten rings.
Marvel comic fans were anticipating the release of this movie and, fortunately, the Marvel movie did better than most were expecting. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has the Tomatometer reaching a percentage of 92%, and the Audience Score being 98%. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the fantasy-adventure film grossed up to $217.9 Million on Box Office for the U.S. A majority of the Audience reviews were positive. A review by Wenlei Ma states, “…Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings offers some of the best choreographed action sequences of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Another review by Sara Michelle Fetters states, “it’s a strong debut for a new hero… the overall film is still less than the sum of its most outstanding parts.” Although there were some claims about the film being “too Disney-based,” the overall majority of the reviews were approving of the Marvel movie. The end-credits scene, featuring Dr. Strange character, Wong, contacting Katy and Shang-Chi, which sent Marvel fans to orbit. Conspiracy theories of the interaction were being posted everywhere hours after the movie was released.
A comparison between the movie and the comic on Joel’s Books describes that the movie changed some parts of the original story in the comments. The original story had Fu Manchu play a big part in the plot, but since Marvel has not gotten the rights back for that character, they could not incorporate it into the film, hence the redesign of Shang-Chi’s storyline to defeat his father. Comic fans were waiting for Marvel’s approach on the story-change, but said that the change was not too disappointing. Even Shang-Chi’s fighting style was changed. In the movie, he uses ten, magically-powered, rings that he gains from the defeat of his father.
Shang-Chi and the movie’s success was overall greatly appreciated by the Asian community. A representation of Asian culture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was another reason why the movie did so well. After watching the movie, several people even wanted to watch it another time. With the success of the newest Marvel hero in the MCU, fans expect to see Shang-Chi return to later Marvel movies. Some speculate that he may even appear in the upcoming Dr. Strange movie.
