Welcome back to Animation News, this week we will be talking about the animation nominees and winners of the Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards. The two primary categories we will be looking at are best Animated Feature and best Animated Short. The nominees for best animated feature were How to Train your Dragon: The Hidden World by Dean DeBlois, I Lost My Body by Jeremy Clapin, Klaus by Sergio Pablos, Missing Link by Chris Butler, and Toy Story 4 by Josh Cooley. The nominees for best animated short were Dcera by Daria Kashcheeva, Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry, Kitbull by Rosana Sullivan, Memorable by Bruno Collet, and Sister by Siqi Song.

Toy Story 4 took home the Academy Award for best animated feature on Sunday, marking the 13th time the big prize has gone to a Disney film”(Whitten, 2020). Toy Story 4‘s song “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” was nominated for best original song in a feature film, but unfortunately the song lost to one of Rocketman‘s original songs. Toy Story 4 was actually the second movie of the franchise to receive the award. Back in 2011, Toy Story 3 also won best animated feature trophy. Disney has won the award 13 times previous to this taking up the large majority of winners since the award was first given out back in 2002.

The 2020 Oscars winner for best animated short went to Hair Love. “In the film, an African-American father learns to do his daughter’s hair for the first time”(Chianne, 2020). The short film was loved for its inclusion of black hair, which is commonly discriminated against and underrepresented in today’s media, especially in animation. Nerisha Penrose calls it, “a win for Black hair, Black fathers, and Black creators”(Penrose, 2020). All the animated feature films and shorts were amazing in their right, but Toy Story 4 and Hair Love rose above the rest. Make sure to go watch the winner’s of the awards and the nominees as well. Next time on Animation News, the Cartoon Network show that will be ending after its last 10 episodes.
