Are you ready for the new Spongebob Squarepants movie, kids? Aye, aye captain! Welcome back to Animation News, this week we are talking about The Spongebob Movie 3: Sponge on the Run. If you are like most people, born in either the 90s and 2000s, then you have probably grown up alongside Nickelodeon’s longest running series Spongebob Squarepants, created by Stephen Hillenburg.

Spongebob first started airing in 1999 and in that time it has acquired 12 seasons, two movies, a Broadway musical, and over 15 academy acclaimed awards.

The movie will focus on “when Gary the Snail goes missing, SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) set out for the Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary back to Bikini Bottom” ( Schaffstall, 2019). Spongebob and Patrick will face a variety of predicaments on their journey to save Gary from his snail napper, while the audience will learn about the importance and the power that comes from friendship. The trailer shows how Spongebob and Gary met during their childhood years and the grief that hits Spongebob after hearing his slimy buddy is missing, but most people are tending to focus on how Keanu Reeves makes  a appearance in the trailer as a character named Sage. Reeves says, “Call me Sage. I’m made out of sage and I am a sage. So it works out pretty well” (Schaffstall, 2019).

Cyndie Lauper is in charge of producing songs for the movie. All original character voice actors are coming back for the movie and the movie will be directed by Tim Hill. The movie is coming to theaters on May 22, 2020.

Next week on Animation News, I’ll be talking about Nickelodeon’s new cartoon featuring a girl with her animal companion.
