Looking at Guns in a Positive Way

Guns have become a serious issue in today’s society. Many people die every year. The average death per year from guns is 36,383 people; but guns are used for defense purposes about 1.2 million times a year. Why is this research being ignored? One in six people that have used guns believe that they would have lost their lives if they didn’t use a gun as a defense method. Also if states banned guns there would be approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, and over 60,000 aggravated assaults would happen yearly. Economist John Lott says”more guns, less crime”. This can be hard to accept because you only hear the bad news. You never hear stories on the news about how someone’s life was saved because of a gun. This happens a lot of times a year without being told to the world. Once there is something bad with a gun, it is shared to a whole nation.

In the United Kingdom the possession of handguns are illegal. Over 2,000 violent crimes are committed per 100,000 people. In the United States 466 violent crimes are committed per 100,00 people. This is because Americans use guns to protect themselves. Every mass shooting in America has happened in gun free zones. Anti gun laws are benefiting criminals and terrorists because they leave innocent citizens defenseless. This is only good for the criminals. 1,527 criminals are killed every year. That number would go down very fast because we wouldn’t be able to protect ourselves.

Let’s look at the comparison between American citizens with guns and American law enforcement with guns: There are 794,300 cops with guns and 80,000,000 citizens with guns. The police have a eleven percent chance to make an error with a gun while citizens have a two percent chance of making an error. Cops stop 14.2 deaths on a yearly average while citizens stop an average  of 2.3 deaths per year. Criminals will find a way to have guns when we don’t, which kills the citizens and not the criminals. In 1982, Kennesaw,  Georgia passed a law that required the head of the household  to keep one or more firearms in the house. At that time, residential burglary rates went down 89%. America is ranked #103 out of 195 countries for intentional homicide. Most criminals will not commit a crime on an armed citizen. All of these facts support my opinion and argument. Yes, there are a lot of shooting every year caused from criminals using guns but it would be a lot worse if American citizens did not have guns to protect themselves.

It might make sense to ban guns at first, but I think it is not the right option. Just like people have illegal drugs, criminals will have guns when we don’t. I know it might seem that if America bans guns then criminals will not have guns and there will be less crime but that is not the case. Just like in Kennesaw, Georgia with the more guns in the right hands comes more protection. Banning guns is only benefiting the terrorists.
