This is the first case ever in Cypriot legal history, where a defendant has been sentenced to seven life sentences as well as the first case of a serial killer in Cypriot history.  Nikos Metaxas, a Greek Cypriot army officer, was lead to court under the accusations of kidnapping, raping, and murdering five women while kidnapping and killing two of the women’s children. He killed these people between September 2016 and the summer of 2018. The relatives of the murdered women and children are accusing the government of neglecting this case.   The missing persons reports were ignored and the killings were investigated for three years before a body was found by a tourist on April 14. The body was brought to the surface of a mine shaft after heavy rains. Four days later Metaxas was arrested. Six of the victims were strangled to death while one suffered from severe head trauma.

He begged for a scientific panel in order to delve into his mind and figure out his reasons for killing the seven people. The women came to him to find work, as he used the online social media handle, “Orestes35” he usually had raped them before he killed them.

Metaxas originally refused to cooperate with authorities, but as the evidence became stacked against him, he confessed with a ten-page handwritten paper. “His victims included Romanian Livia Florentina Bunea, 36, and her 8-year-old daughter Elena Natalia; Maricar Valtez Arquiola, 31, from the Philippines; Ashita Khadka Bista, from Nepal; and Tiburcio’s daughter, Sierra Grace.” (Keep Talking Greece). Metaxas lead the investigators to the places where he dumped the body of his victims.  They found Bunea, her daughter and Arquiola’s remains stuffed in a suitcase and thrown into a toxic lake that was connected to the mineshaft. Bista’s remains were discovered in a dry well at an army firing range. Tiburcio’s daughter was found in a diffrent lake, wrapped in a sheet and weighed down by a rock. Metaxas claimed that he strangled Tiburcio and Bunea out of hatred because he thought they were prostituting their children. He strangled the children while they slept so they, “wouldn’t have to suffer anymore” (Keep Talking Greece). Prosecutors claimed that the mothers were nothing but loving and caring for their children. He, Metaxas, also told Investigators that he strangled Maricar and Lozano as he climaxed during sex with them. He also said he killed Bista in anger after she spit at him for videoing their encounter. All of these women except one had been filed as a missing person. New investigations say that there may have been up to thirty women, that he did not confess to.

These murder chargers are on top of  rape charges. “The 35-year-old army captain allegedly raped a foreign woman in his car in early 2017, Neophytos Shailos, chief of Cyprus Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, told Nicosia District Court in the country’s capital.” (INDEPENDENT). The women was modeling for him and he raped he when picking her up in his vehicle. He promised to give her the photos she modeled for, but he is also said to have recorded the 19 year-old girl.
