Back on April 17, 2019, Nintendo dropped an update for the critically-acclaimed fighting game Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch. All new features that were announced did come with the 3.0 update. This Update came with many new feature to the base game and the release of the first dlc fighter pass.

The new fighter, Joker, was an unexpected entry into the Smash Bros roster, first being announced all the way back on December 6th, 2018. Joker, the first Smash character originating from the Persona game series created by the game studio Atlus, came as a surprise that no person ever saw coming to Smash. His fighter’s pass included the stage Mementos and several music tracks from not only Persona 5 but also from Persona 4 and 3. When a song that plays from Persona 5, 4, or 3 the base color changes to either red, yellow, and blue respectively. For his moveset, Joker has his signature gun-and-knife combo, giving him both decent melee and ranged combat affinity. After either waiting, charging the meter, or taking in damage; Joker will remove his mask unleashing Arsene, a Persona which is a manifestation of himself. While Arsene is by Joker, each attack deals more damage and a few attacks change to a more powerful form, and allows him to use a new recovery move, which is more powerful and can cross greater distances. This Persona ability is unique to Joker, as he is the only character in Smash so far that can access his Persona’s boost. When Joker’s final smash and victory poses are direct references from his game, Persona 5. When purchasing his fighter pass the player is able to receive spirits from the Persona series once beating them in the special spirit board.

The 3.0 update not only came with the long-awaited Joker, but also added additional features to the base game. One of these highly-anticipated features was the stage builder. Originating in Smash Brawl for the Wii, the creative tool has been a recurring appearance in the Smash series, returning to Smash in Smash 4 for the Wii U, and now to Smash Ultimate for the Switch. However this time, Stage builder has been updated to bring even more creative inventions. Speaking of creative inventions, the update brought a in game video editor so that players could record and share entertaining or funny clips while playing. Although Nintendo has restricted the editor to only accept clips there were recorded and saved post-3.0, new extensions and improves are said to be planned for the future. These creations are meant to be shared, so nintendo has released Smash World, an instagram for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so that gamers can share and download their favorite stages and custom characters. All other changes that came with the 3.0 update are focused on minor features like bug-busting and character balancing.

However something unexpected came with the 3.0 update. Unfortunately the update may have caused the servers at Nintendo to crash. Many players had to wait an extended period of time for the update to be properly transferred, amounting to around two hours allocated to server maintenance, and didn’t waste any time traveling over to social media sites like Twitter and Reddit to echo their concerns, as they feel that they are obligated to the product they purchased. Nintendo apologized for the inconvenience and tried their best to recover their servers. This problem has been a staple of Smash Online’s presence, as Nintendo, while having a cheap online service compared to other game studios, is infamous for their poor quality and annoying aspects. However in the end, many players rejoiced when they were finally able to update Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to access the new features and finally play as Joker.
