Just a few short weeks ago, the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament, more commonly known as March Madness, captivated the attention of millions of Americans throughout the country. This tournament started on March 21, 2019 this year and concluded on the date of April 8, 2019 (ESPN). The tournament starts with the round of sixty four, but with the first four in needing to play a game to get into the official tournament, it could technically be considered as sixty eight teams make it. The definite favorite of all of the people during the time of March Madness is all the upsets that occur that are entirely unpredictable.

The favorites to win it all this year were clearly Duke, with phenomenon Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, and Cam Reddish, North Carolina, who always goes far in the tournament, Gonzaga, and Virginia, looking to rebound from the devastating, history-making loss to UMBC last year.

The Tournament started out with only minimal upsets and a lot of the favorites stayed in the tournament to go to the second round, or the round of thirty two. The only truly notable upset was UC Irvine beat Kansas State who was a number four seed while UC Irvine was a thirteen seed. Along with the second round, there came a lot of scares including that of the game of Duke versus Tacko Fall and his team of the UCF Knights. With the last seconds of the game, UCF failed to convert two layups and lost by a score of 77-76. The round of sixteen, also known as the Sweet Sixteen, experienced another close game concerning Duke. This opponent was now Virginia Tech and they similarly lost in the last second because of a missed layup again. A set of upsets occurred during the Sweet Sixteen including: Texas Tech triumphing over Michigan by a score of sixty three to forty four, Auburn beating North Carolina by a score of ninety seven to eighty, and Purdue beating Tennessee by a score of ninety nine to ninety four.

The round known as the Elite Eight came next in the tournament. IT was in this round that the luck of fan favorite Duke ran out, as they were knocked out by the team of Michigan state, with a score of sixty seven to sixty eight. Auburn continued its upsetting ways by knocking out Kentucky by a score of seventy seven to seventy one. Texas Tech also joined the party by upsetting Gonzaga with a score of seventy five to sixty nine.

Entering the Final Four, the teams left were Michigan State, Virginia, Auburn, and Texas Tech. The matchups were Michigan State versus Texas Tech, which was won by Texas Tech by a score of sixty one to fifty one, and Virginia versus Auburn, which Virginia won by a score of eighty five to seventy seven. The final match up to win the whole tournament was between Virginia, on their road of redemption, and Texas Tech, hoping to win it their first time making it that far. The game was very hard fought, but eventually ended with the Virginia Cavaliers defeating the Texas Tech Red Raiders with a score in the Final of eighty five to seventy seven.(ESPN)
