For the past month Chad Elwartowski and Supranee Thepde have been living on the Coast of Thailand. But what’s different about this story is that they live on the water, 13 miles straight from the beach, this couple lives on the water. These US Citizens live a life style called Seasteading .

“Seasteading is building floating societies with significant political autonomy. Nearly half the world’s surface is unclaimed by any nation-state, and many coastal nations can legislate Seasteading in their territorial waters” (The Seasteading Institute). The members of the Seasteading society are pushing to start building Eco-friendly communities on the water. One of the main programs funding and making the most progress is called the Seasteading Institute. They believe “Floating societies will provide the means for rapid innovation in voluntary governance and reverse environmental damage to our oceans. Seasteads will unleash the Blue Economy to create jobs and foster entrepreneurship” (Seasteading Institute). Along with living on the water and cleaning the underwater ecosystems the members, “Want free seas. There are as many reasons to seastead as there are problems to solve profitably. Eight “aquapreneurs” plan to enrich the poor, cure the sick, feed the hungry, clean the atmosphere, live in balance with nature, power the world, and live in peace” (Seasteading Institute).

Chad Elwartowski and Supranee Thepde “Had lived at the seastead for around a month and had documented their adventure online. However, Thailand’s navy claimed the couple ‘endangered national sovereignty’ by living on the structure, a crime which is punishable by imprisonment or even death. The couple were tipped off and fled the structure by the time the navy reached them and are now on the run” (Sky News). “Thai police confirmed they were searching for the couple, and that the navy had filed a criminal charge regarding the pair. They added that Mr Elwartowski was a fugitive of Thailand, and has had his visa revoked, whilst Ms Thepdet remains wanted by police” (Sky News). This couple has done nothing wrong but now their lives have changed and are on the run for their own lives. This kind of horrible treatment could be because they are citizens of the United States of America. “In an email, Mr Elwartowski said in a statement: ‘This is ridiculous… we lived on a floating house boat for a few weeks and now Thailand wants us killed. We are still quite scared for our lives. We seriously did not think we were doing anything wrong and thought this would be a huge benefit for Thailand in so many ways. I believe my lawyer can come to an amicable agreement with the Thai government”‘ (Sky News).

Now all that is left to do is wait and pray that this innocent couple makes it out alive and can get back to the precious work of saving the planet.
