Cities floating in the sea may become a true reality sooner than people would have thought. The idea mainly gained its popularity in the movie Waterworld, a film set after all the ice caps have melted and there is no longer any land. This forces people to create cities in the ocean so as to survive and not swim forever. However, the floating cities now being researched are not specific;y for post-apocalyptic situations.

The studies are being conducted by multiple people and companies, “UN-Habitat, which works on sustainable urban development, will team up with private firm Oceanix, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and The Explorers Club, a professional society that promotes scientific exploration around the world, to further the idea.”(BBC) all of which are striving to create the cities. Not only to prepare for the future melting of ice caps but also to improve the lives of the people living here today. The people working on the project such as “Mr. Wiese of The Explorers Club said that selling the idea to investors and the public need not be a “doomsday bunker scenario” (BBC) and rather an enjoyable living area people can enjoy, he also wishes to not have the floating cities closed off to all save the wealthy few. The researchers hope to create the floating cities for the present days rather than have them as a back up for what many believe will be a future planet completely submerged in water with no land in site.

The main idea for having floating cities is to help the people of today rather than prepare for climate change disasters. One major purpose the cities could have is to help people in natural disasters who have lost their homes to things such as hurricanes and other such tropical storms while their houses are being rebuilt. There would also be “floating hospitals being towed to disaster areas” (BBC) as well. Though the ideas of the floating cities are noble ones to help improve humanity and their living conditions, not everyone is convinced.
Even though the researchers have stated that the cities are not specifically for an emergency situation, there are many who are still skeptical about how the cities would work. The project will be called Oceanix City named after the main company doing the research, and will essentially “be groups of hexagonal platforms – anchored to the seabed – that could each house around 300 people, effectively creating a community for 10,000 residents.”(BBC) as for the way they will float, the technology already exists and is used by many companies for various reasons. But even with these inventions such as floating houses which “thousands of such houses in the Netherlands and other communities around the world.” (BBC) already exists. In reality, the idea of a large scale floating city is completely unheard of and therefore questioned.

The other concern of people would be what the psychological impacts the cities would have on its inhabitants, those in question had an “immediate response that was not technological but rather visceral, she didn’t like the idea of something that could drift away.”(BBC) they fear that if they drift away, they could drift away from society. The fears have been addressed, however, the funding for the project is still not at a substantial level, meaning they are underfunded and are not able to fully create a real floating city any time soon. The researchers hope that they will be able to convince enough supporters to fund their project and get the first floating city up and running sometime soon rather than wait for a farther and darker future.
