Last January, a man by the name of Bruce McArthur was arrested and charged with the murder two men in Toronto, Canada. Since then, police have connected the dots between cold cases and disappearances to reveal a surprising conviction. To prove their concerns correct, McArthur confessed to murdering eight men on January 18, 2019.

All eight of these men have been linked to the Toronto Gay Village neighborhood, a safe haven for all LGBT+ downtown Toronto. The victims went missing between 2010-17. Before the accusation and confession of McArthur, these cases became cold and unsolvable. The first to go missing was Skandaraj Navaratnam. Navaratnam was confirmed to have been a romantic interest to McArthur before he went missing in 2010. After this came Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, Dean Lisowick (possibly), Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, and other unidentified people. Most of the victims were immigrants from the Middle East or places in South Asia. Before McArthur’s arrest in 2018, the people of the gay community were criticizing the authorities efforts on finding such a large group of their community. The first time McArthur was suggested as a suspect, “he denies that there is evidence suggesting a serial killer is walking the streets of Toronto” (cp24). However, further investigation of more victims did, indeed, prove McArthur guilty.

Landscaper Bruce McArthur buried his victims at the home of elderly clients he had a deal to keep his equipment there in exchange for free services (BBC). When police searched his own home, they found a duffel bag with the possible murder weapons: duct tape, a surgical glove, a black bungee cord, zip ties, and syringes. Many of the victims were buried at 53 Mallory Crescent, the home with his lawn equipment, but a couple bodies were discovered in a ravine nearby. Police searched the entire city of Toronto, Canada, searching for anyone the self-employed landscaper could be linked to. They also reopened cold case files from decades before. This breakthrough was monumental to the authorities.

Karen Fraser, the owner of the house where victims were uncovered, felt betrayed by the man she and her husband had known or decades. His betrayal was just as surprising and unexpected to them as it had been to the Village, as locals called it. “‘What does remorse look like? I only saw a blank face,” she said, calling him “evil” and a “shuffling, broken man, as he should be.'” Fraser said in an interview. She had also mentioned that she had seen two of the victims on her property, not knowing what McArthur was planning. Her thoughts refuse to deem her landscaper as a serial murderer. “Mrs. Fraser said that in her mind, there were two Bruce McArthurs: “Bruce A” and “Bruce B”.” One of which, she believes is still a nice guy, even though McArthur did plead guilty.

Bruce McArthur pled guilty on January 18, 2019, relieving the Village of the haunting that’s been setting the people on edge since the disappearance of Skandaraj Navaratnam. McArthur was given a life sentence in prison, or until he turns 91. Toronto’s serial killer case has been solved and the Village can now safely rest without fear.
