The world has been waiting for the day that self-lacing shoes would be a reality ever since their debut in the hit sequel Back to the Future 2. The movie came out in 1989 but they time travel to the future in 2015, when the self lacing shoes were finally created. Ever since this movie, Americans have been dreaming about when these shoes will be available to the public. Only about 4 years late of what the movie predicted, Nike came out with the world’s first self lacing basketball shoes, the Hyper Adapt 1.0.

Unlike in the movie, these shoes do not have visible laces but adjust to the shape and size of the users foot.  The shoes themselves have laces but they are hidden under the shoe. The laces have a system of pulleys with a motor that expand and contract on the users foot. This motor is very powerful for just lacing up shoes and is more than capable than doing its job. The motor and all other parts run through a flexible circuit board in the sole of the shoe. The shoes have buttons on the side but can also be controlled by an app on the users phone. On the bottom of the shoe, there is a compartment for charging that is covered by a removable plastic cover. The shoes come with a custom charger just for these shoes.  The shoe also has lights under the arch of the foot that lights up with every step they take. This light tells how charged the shoes are. Blue means the shoes are fully or nearly charged, yellow means they are about half-way charged and red means they are almost dead. These shoes have an amazing capacity for charging and can go 5 to 6 weeks without a charge. These shoes marked price is $720 dollars but the consumer gets a ridiculous amount of tech in these shoes.

The reviews on this product so far have all been positive. The shoes are easy to get on and off and are not much heavier considering the amount of tech in the shoes. The athletes that tested these shoes have reported that they feel great and are just as comfortable as regular sneakers. These shoes are sold by appointment only right now in one of two stores in Manhattan which are both completely booked. Nike will be working on fixing this problem to allow more people to buy their newest feat of sneaker engineering.
