In the United States, 79% of houses display a Christmas tree and 80% of those the Christmas trees are artificial. These artificial trees get more and more realistic every year and more people opt for the artificial tree. Christmas tree farmers in America have struggled because of their fake competition which results in the number of farms decreasing every year.

Natural Christmas trees are not harmful. It’s not upsetting to cut them down because that is what they are meant for. These trees are not found in nature and cut down, but are planted for this specific purpose. An article on Green Global Travel says, “Christmas tree farms help stabilize the soil, protect water supplies, and provide refuge for wildlife. As evergreens, they also improve the scenery!” A common fallacy is that Christmas trees harm the environment because they are taking a tree out of the environment but it is the opposite. More trees are being planted and those are the trees that are being cut down as Christmas trees. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, for every tree cut down, one to three saplings are planted to replace it. Christmas trees are also a renewable resource, whereas plastic is not. The trees can be harvested and replanted every year and will improve the environment. These trees are commonly grown in soil that would not grow much else so they are just more trees on the earth. One of the best signs that it is the Christmas season is when the family goes to a Christmas tree lot and picks out the tree. This has much more Christmas spirit than going up to the attic or to the storage space and grabbing the dusty old tree.

Although fake Christmas trees save money because a consumer does not have to buy a new tree every year, real Christmas trees are all around better for the environment. Fake trees are produced in a factory and are made of plastic that pollutes the air. Real Christmas trees get help clean the air and get rid of pollutants in the environment. Real trees are also grown locally and are an american tradition and business. Fake trees may be produced in America but are most likely imported from a foreign nation like China. A real tree is better for the environment and is better in the sense that it has more of the Christmas spirit than a fake tree. So keep this in mind when deciding what tree to get in the upcoming Christmas season.
