Usually, when people think of robberies, they think of things being stolen and lost due to thieves stealing an item and then disappearing.  However, the tables turned during a heist to take an ATM. In an English village called Dedham, a couple of robbers crashed through a convenience store with “A black Toyota Hilux” (East Anglican Daily Times) apparently, this has been just one of the many incidents that have been occurring “In north Essex and Suffolk over the past two years, where criminals have targeted the outlets’ cash machine” (East Anglican Daily Times).  Though this was no ordinary crime scene, the criminals fled the scene after they were unsuccessful in finding an ATM, and are still not found. But they were more helpful than harmful.

According to LiveScience, “The ram-and-run attack on the 1520-era house helped reveal previously undiscovered treasures. These came from both the medieval and Tudor periods and long lay hidden beneath the building’s historic floors.”  the archaeologists were able to find treasures such as a medieval hearth, a hidden 15th-century porch, and a tripod cauldron. The cauldron seemed to be the most interesting discovery as it was found buried at the front entrance of the house. According to LiveScience, the pot was probably buried there as a totem to ward off evil.  Though this superstition was proven false, the discovery was still an insight into how people and culture were like during those times.

The items discovered were from differing periods, as according to LiveScience, some of the things were found during the Tudor age, as in the early fifteen hundreds. There was also some artifacts that were discovered that dated back to the medieval era. Interestingly enough, this grand discovery would not have been found without the criminals’ attempted theft. Without them, the valuable artifacts would have been lost to the ages.  This discovery not only helps historians, but all of humanity by giving society a view of its past.

As for the building in general, it has been fully restored and the convenience store reopens its doors on the 30th of October. Though the thieves were able to get away, the police are hot on their trail and overall, something good actually did come out of them doing a crime, though not in a way one would expect. In the end, it is a happy ending to a terrible crime which will benefit society with a window to the past for years to come.
