James “Whitey” Bulger, an American crime boss and Boston gangster, was beaten to death in jail by a couple inmates. Bulger is responsible for  racketeering, money laundering, extortion, weapons charges, and 19 murders. He was considered one of the worse criminals of the modern time, and fled for 16 years. Bulger even made it on the “FBI top ten most wanted fugitives list” coming in at second behind Osama bin Laden. ABC News says, “Bulger, while an FBI informant, was “operating without any restrictions,” according to Tom Foley, a retired Colonel in the Mass State Police” (ABC News). Bulger was a head of the Winter Hill Gang which is a group located in Southern Boston and is filled with crime figures who are of Irish and Italian descent.

“Whitey” Bulger was first arrested on June 22, 2011 outside of an apartment complex in Santa Monica, California, and he was tried in 2013 and pleaded guilty. He was then sentenced to life in prison. He was transferred to several facilities in October 2018. He first went to a prison in Oklahoma and then to the United States Penitentiary, Hazelton near Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.  The last place where he was contained is where he was fatally beaten to death. Newser says, “They apparently tuned him up to the point where he was unrecognizable,” and “The Boston crime boss’s eyes were “dislodged” from his head, though it wasn’t clear whether that was due to the severity of the beating or the killers’ reported attempts to gouge out his eyes” (Newser). Reportedly, the inmates wheeled Bulger into a corner in the cell and proceeded to beat him there. Newser also said, “Bulger was beaten with a padlock inside a sock; he was covered in bruises, bleeding profusely, and reportedly had “several dents in his head” when prison authorities found him” (Newser). CNN explains, “The attackers who killed notorious mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger at a high-security federal prison in West Virginia tried to cut out his tongue” (CNN). They tried cutting  out his tongue because that is what the punishment is for a mobster who snitches or cooperates with law enforcement.

One of the suspects who killed Bulger is identified as Fotios “Freddy” Geas. Geas as apparently a mafia hitman from Massachusetts. Bulger was found dead at 8:20 on October 30, 2018 at the age of 89. Newser declares, “many in Boston were relieved to see Bulger, whom a federal jury found culpable in 11 killings, gone” (Newser).
