The movie, The First Man, came out on October 12, 2018, and portrays the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong, played by Ryan Gosling, and the events that led to the first moonwalk and his life leading up to that point. The movie was based on a book by James R. Hansen. The book was a biography based off of fifty hours of interviews of Neil Armstrong, his family, friends, and his co-workers. “From his seventy-eight combat missions as a naval aviator flying over North Korea to his formative trans-atmospheric flights in the rocket-powered X-15 to his piloting Gemini VIII to the first-ever docking in space.” (Den of Geek) this book and movie has all of his life’s work, accomplishments and failed missions.

Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy portrayed Neil and his wife, Janet Shearon. They did an outstanding job showing all of the test and trials that the Armstrong family went through, from losing their daughter to Neils fame and glory of the moon landing. The movie has received an 82% positive on Rotten Tomatoes as of October 25, 2018. “A movie so revelatory in its realism, so gritty in its physicality, that it becomes a drama of thrillingly hellbent danger and obsession.”(Variety).

Director Damien Chazelle is an Oscar awarded director. Directed La La Land, Whiplash, Guy, And Madeline on a park bench, and many more movies. He was said to be an amazing director, but when the movie, The First Man, was released and failed, many people started questioning his directing abilities.

The only thing that is striking an uproar was the fact that they did not show more emphasis on putting the flag on the moon. The director of the movie, Damien Chazelle said, “(It) was widely regarded not as an American, but as a human achievement.” He also said that this was not a political thing nor did he mean to offend anyone. He was just trying to respect Armstrong’s thoughts on it because he to believed it was not an American achievement but an achievement of the human race. In an interview he said, “I don’t think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero.”   Although sources say that this is not the reason that The First Man is having trouble at the box office.

The movie was predicted to hit twenty million dollars opening weekend, but when that weekend rolled around, it only hit sixteen and a half million dollars. It has slipped down the rankings even past Goosebumps. So far, the movie has only hit twenty-eight million dollars in the domestic box office. Seventy percent of the watchers have said that they were extremely or moderately satisfied with the movie while seven percent said they were not satisfied at all. This was a big shock to many people considering how important it was to history.

Damien Chazelle also said he wanted to portray the aspects of Armstrong’s life that is less famous and has not been focused on. For example, the movie shows how Armstrong lost his daughter to cancer and it also shows the emotions behind it, leading to his applying for a new job. It showed all of the hardships and trials he had to overcome to be the first man on the moon. The movie displayed all of the sadness and drama that was in their family as Neil left his family to go to space with a very possible chance that he would not be coming home. This movie had heart racing scenes that took the audience’s breath.
